What size inverter do I need for my house?

The right inverter size depends on two things: how much power your appliances use together, and the short spike when motors like AC, fridge and pumping machine start.

Step 1: Add up what runs at the same time

Write down every appliance you want on the inverter. Check the label on each one for its watts (W).

Add up the watts of the things that run together. Example: fridge 150 W, TV 100 W, 4 fans 280 W, lights 100 W = 630 W.

Step 2: Allow for the starting spike

Fridges, freezers, AC and pumps pull much more power for a few seconds when they start. The inverter must handle that spike, not only the running load.

This is why a 1 HP AC on a small inverter can trip it, even when the running watts look fine.

Step 3: Pick a size with some room

Typical Nigerian homes land around these sizes: 1–1.5 kVA for lights, fans, TV and a small fridge; 3.5 kVA when you add a freezer or 1 HP AC; 5 kVA and up for two ACs or a pumping machine.

These are rough ranges. Your own appliance list gives the real answer.

Is kVA the same as kW?

Close enough for home planning. A 3.5 kVA inverter can carry about 3.5 kW with a good modern inverter.
